Ok I admit it

Post #317. I guess it would be more of a response than an answer, as he didn't ask a question. But it was poignant to the question you asked about what would it take for us to accept Jesus.
"There remain four irreducible objections to religious faith: that it wholly misrepresents the origins of man and the cosmos, that because of this original error it manages to combine the maximum servility with the maximum of solipsism, that it is both the result and the cause of dangerous sexual repression, and that it is ultimately grounded on wish-thinking." ~Christopher Hitchens, god is not Great

The answer to that is actually really simple: at a certain point, kids have doubts about Santa, and when they ask their parents, they aren't told that he does exist. There comes a point in every child's life where the parents admit that Santa is a fiction, something they don't do with god.

Put it this way: if you expressed your doubts about Santa to your dad, I doubt he would ever silence you the way he does when you doubt god, right?

Because atheism isn't the position "there is no god, ever," it's "I'm not going to believe in a god until you can give me some evidence." The default is to disbelieve in a claim, as Jacob and I have been trying to show you these past few pages, until there's evidence for it, wouldn't you agree?

I'm not sure he'd like it if everyone on the so-called developed world was to sue the guy for stealing money in exchange for toys of exactly that worth.

Don't you think you're just adding a layer of complexity where it doesn't exist?

Well let's not argue about silly stuff like that, let's get back to real stuff like God.
You asked for it! Tongue

The reality of the divine is not established.
In fact, there are some hints that the divine is entirely created by the human mind... much like Santa, unicorns, dragons, Sauron, Harry Potter, Flying Spaghetti Monster, the Na'vi, the klingons, the jedi, etc, etc, etc

But sooooo many people believe in Jesus, that's my evidence. Seriously, what group on earth do you consider to have the truth despite being so small as you claim atheists do despite about 97-98% of the world disagree with them?

Because at some point in your childhood, the people who lied to you about Santa Claus came clean and admitted that it was made up. They should've done the same regarding god, and you wouldn't be crippled by the fear of hell.
"Well, evolution is a theory. It is also a fact. And facts and theories are different things, not rungs in a hierarchy of increasing certainty. Facts are the world's data. Theories are structures of ideas that explain and interpret facts. Facts don't go away when scientists debate rival theories to explain them. Einstein's theory of gravitation replaced Newton's in this century, but apples didn't suspend themselves in midair, pending the outcome. And humans evolved from ape- like ancestors whether they did so by Darwin's proposed mechanism or by some other yet to be discovered."

If you woke up tomorrow and ninety percent of the population had converted to the norse religion, would that be evidence for Odin?

There was a point in time when the first person who noticed the earth to be round was the only person on earth to think that. Did that make him any less correct?

Besides, the atheist claim is just "I don't know, but I'm not going to believe you without evidence." Does that sound like we claim to be in possession of the truth to you?

7 Billion people on Earth.
2 Billion people believe in Jesus
5 Billion people don't believe in Jesus.

But still, it's a fallacy to rely on numbers (or authority) for the truth.

No group has "the truth". Science has theories backed by evidence and observation, but even the most fundamental parts of science are subject to change when new evidence presents itself.

Lastly, why does it have to be a "group"? And why do you think it has to be only one group?

On your first point: Maybe, since obviously there was something there that was converting people, I'd at least do research and see why the sudden switch.
On your second point: But that was before people could research anything scientific in an instant. But even with all this technology and knowledge, most still believe there's a God.
On your third point: Well you think the rest are wrong.

But over half at least believe in the Abrahamic God.

Aha! And why aren't you doing the same sort of research on why people believe in Jesus, before you take it as evidence that he's real?

Quote:On your second point: But that was before people could research anything scientific in an instant. But even with all this technology and knowledge, most still believe there's a God.

Yep, and there's still a flat earth society too. The fact that we can avail ourselves of knowledge doesn't mean that everyone will, or that they'll accept it even if they do. People aren't perfectly rational.

Besides, there's still no smoking gun, definitive proof that there is no god, and there might never be, since proving a negative is really hard. So the fact that we have science doesn't mean god has been disproved; however, the time to believe in something is when there's evidence, not before. There's no positive evidence for god, so why offer it belief any more than we would another idea with no evidence behind it, like that airplanes are actually demons in disguise?

Quote:On your third point: Well you think the rest are wrong.

Not really. I do think they haven't given sufficient evidence to believe that they're right yet, though.
