Bates Motel and Hannibal

Both these shows are back for a second season and I am so friggin' glad that they are. Hannibal is more of a thriller about the cat and mouse game Hannibal Lector and Will Graham play. Right now, Will's losing hard. I'm interested to know what you guys think of Hannibal Lector. Is he a sociopath? Is he insane? I think he displays emotions (other than anger) on occasion, which would indicate he is not a sociopath. Yet, it doesn't seem that he has a conscience. As far as insanity, he seems capable of rational thought and fully aware of his actions. I just don't know with him.
Bates Motel is about famous fictional serial killer Norman Bates' teen years. It's more of a drama that shows how completely fucked up his relationship with his mother was. However, instead of being set in whatever era Norman would have grown up in, it is set in the present. No wonder he developed Dissociative Identity Disorder.

Really looking forward to sitting down at night and finally watching it. So glad all the 'big three' are back.

I haven't seen Bates Motel.
But . . .
I've watched probably the first four episodes of Hannibal and really couldn't get into it. Does it get better after those?

Well, as an adaptation of the book, Manhunter is not that good. As a film, it's easily one of Michael Mann's best. I'm still glad they remade it, though.
That said, on the show, I'm quite intrigued by the way Hugh Dancy plays Will Graham; I see quite a lot of myself in him; seriously, if you go to the TVTropes character page, I'm sure half of Will's tropes fit me perfectly.

The problem might be that I saw Silence of the Lambs before Manhunter. In fact, I never heard of Manhunter before SotL, and it was only because of SotL that I read Red Dragon then learned there was a movie made of it.
Now, I have no problem with Mann, and I'm an 80s baby, but Manhunter was so 80s stylized, clean, sterile, etc... that it just left a sour taste in my brain. Maybe it was a good work relative to Mann, but being part of the Lechter series I just can't look past its shortcomings from that perspective.
SotL, and eventually the new Red Dragon, were far more close to what I'd expect from those books.... Earthy, dark, surrealistic..etc.
But that's just my 2 copper. (Adjusted for the king's inflation that would probably be about 1 electrum and 4 silver these days)
