Just saw the trailer for the film 'Son of God.'

Ok, this is 2014. A huge amount of scholarship has been done on whether there was a historical Jesus. Not a little of this work has focused on his appearance. The general consensus is that he would have been short (by modern standards) with brown eyes, olive skin, and black hair, close-cropped and - probably - curly.

So WHY do films insist on still making him look like Cesare Borgia??

A long time ago, Europeans didn't like Islam nearly as much as middle easters. Unfortunately it was a little hard to bash middle easterns when your savior was a middle eastern. So they white washed him, and I have never seen a picture of him in a church as anything other than a white guy.

It's kind of like how we say the sun rises and sets, when we know it doesn't really rise or set. We're just so used to it that it's the way we have it anyway.
