Why is he comparing consensual sex to theft of nectarines?

Besides why should people stay together if they don't like each other when they can look for people they like? Seems like a stupid thing to do.

How did he became that way? I read he was an atheist and friend with Tolkien(who I like very much even though he was a theist).
