Some questions that need to be answered

What would be the nature of the above 'something'? in other words, is it a whole something? a lot of things together? something out of our imagination? etc.

All the religious beliefs we have been exposed to so far in our lives, is that the only argument for God's existence? can there be other explanations?

does the existence of God need to metaphysical if He exists?

What would make us believe in God?

What is God, as far as you have heard so far in your life and how does He communicate with us?

...I have more questions, but let's start with answering these first.

1) Laurence Krauss wrote a really good book called "A Universe from Nothing". It's confusing as hell, but I'd recommend it.

2) I don't know. Maybe a "primeval atom".

3) There are a lot of arguments for god's existence. They're all flawed.

4) Probably not. But I don't know.

5) Empirical, testable, repeatable, falsifiable, peer-reviewed evidence.

6) A product of humanity's fear of death and need to explain things.

10 The phrase "coming from" is utterly meaningless if you don't have time and dynamics

Therationalist, good questions u got there... if nothing was from nothing then something came from something that was nothing from something. Something does come from nothing or else something is nothing unless nothing is something.. very easy. .. thank you.

RE: Some questions that need to be answered
i discovered for me to be on the same page as many here, I got to do some research or think more on this topic. What you all said didnt quite make sense to me. There were too many things you took for granted i thought. such as the existence of a universe where the usual causal nature or time lapse is non existent. The Big Bang is the reason, as if that's the only answer and more importantly those two words clearly answers my question. some tried to propose some very very sophisticated approach, highly complicated premises, theories. It gave me a vibe that finding the answers to my questions is highly complex, not for laymen at least.

But i thought there would be simpler approaches, that thought is all that is required, not extensive research but rather the answer is in our head. Or shall I say, what if its right there? are we thinking enough for ourselves? I believe in simplicity.

hence i found it quite hard to reply all these days, didnt actually know how to reply to you my fellow mates.

NOthing personal, a reply to all. I would still appreciate if you try to answer my questions in a simplistic approach.

Sorry, but I'm not grasping why these questions 'need' to be answered. Will my taxes go up if I don't answer? Will my wang cease to function? Will I be eaten by wolves?

I'm sure these are questions you would like to have answered, but could you explain the 'need'?

Okay. I'll start at the others:

I'm having a bit of trouble understanding the question, but I'm reading "are the religious believes we've been exposed to the only arguments for God's existence?". Is that correct? If so:

Yes and no. A lot of arguments are rehashings of older arguments. For example: threatening people with hell is an argument from force. Pascal's Wager is a bit more complex, but pretty much derives entirely from that.

I'm sure we (humans) can come up with more arguments, but most will probably be drived from older arguments. As we learn more about the universe, it may open up new questions, and believers might insert their personal god into those questions, but we'll have to wait for that.

(April 1, 2014 at 5:36 am)therationalist Wrote: does the existence of God need to metaphysical if He exists?

It depends on what you believe about God, I suppose. I need to know what god we're talking about, and what it is capable of. The Christian god is described as being both physical and not at the same time. He's supposedly everywhere at once while simultaneously being unobservable.

(April 1, 2014 at 5:36 am)therationalist Wrote: What would make us believe in God?

Depends on the person. For me, it would be any evidence that obviously proved God without me having to assume he exists in the first place.

Also, he does exist, he could have lowered the bar drastically by appearing to more cultures than just the ancient Hebrews, and he could have kept appearing to those cultures for the past 2,000 years. Then, we might accept God as something that is a normal part of every day life, as opposed to just another bit of mythology tied to a very specific culture from several thousand years ago.

My best guess? Hebrew mythology. He "communicates" to us when believers confirm their beliefs he exists and get some good feeling along with it. So, he likely "communicates" with dopamine, oxitocin, or other endorphins.

Your wang will be taxed and eaten by wolves. This is why I responded!
