The first Mass Effect is the best game I've ever played, especially when considering the story. Dragon Age was the game that got me into BioWare's games, also great a story, but unlike ME, which is SciFi, DA is fantasy. The controllers for both games are quite simple, DA even more so than ME. A huge part of both titles is how much your playing and decision making forms your character.
When I was young, there was a god with infinite power protecting me. Is there anyone else who felt that way? And was sure about it? but the first time I fell in love, I was thrown down - or maybe I broke free - and I bade farewell to God and became human. Now I don't have God's protection, and I walk on the ground without wings, but I don't regret this hardship. I want to live as a person. -Arina Tanemura

It's effectively a Diablo III clone RPG-esque style. Pretty dark and enjoyable. It's free on Steam

So get Skyrim - you can set the difficulty wherever you like, whenever you like, and I can assure you - on the most difficult settings, it is not easy at all.

Meh, personally Skyrim bored me to death. I got through about 8 hrs and walked away. What a waste of $50.

Then try mods - there are some overhauls that change the game completely - try Requiem - it de-levels the world so that all enemies are the same regardless of level - you have to improve a lot before attempting some stuff.

Ooh, I just read that CK2 has William the Conqueror in it. My wife did some research and says I'm descended from him (from a bastard but historically recognized line), so maybe I should give that one a try.

Yes it does - one of thousands of characters you can play as. The base game has the start just before the Battle of Stamford Bridge.

The one must is mouse steer, as I'm used to that with DDO and don't want to change. I tried LOTRO and SWTOR but missed the mouse steer. Doesn't have to be an online game. Thanks. If you want a great story, I think you really need to get a PS2 emulator and play the old Final Fantasy games. I've never been so deeply involved with characters in any other game.
I'm not sure about the mechanics of movement, though-- I doubt they'd point-and-click.

Basically a resource management rpg type thing based on star trekesque type exploration and combat. If you like FTL (&/or Dwarf Fortress), you may want to give RimWorld a shot. It's still in development, but I've been playing it for the past week & man, it's excellent.
