Definition of belief (n) Bing Dictionary be·lief[ bi léef ] acceptance of truth of something: acceptance by the mind that something is true or real, often underpinned by an emotional or spiritual sense of certainty trust: confidence that somebody or something is good or will be effective something that somebody believes in: a statement, principle, or doctrine that a person or group accepts as true I merely believe in observable and conclusively verifiable evidence. I had a theist use this one on me the other day ("thanks for sharing your beliefs in evolution!")and I had to let him know just what I believed in and why my belief in my beliefs is founded whereas theirs isn't. I also learned from Ryan, this one when they say 'you have faith in your belief'--which, in my opinion, is when you've won the debate because let's face it: they're just trying to make your blood boil, and the second you show emotion they'll pounce on you personally-- and here's what Esqui said: Esquilax Wrote:Faith is maintaining a belief in spite of evidence; if new evidence comes to light, science changes to reflect that. I thought that was pretty insightful and an example of, 'honesty is the best policy.'
If I were to create self aware beings knowing fully what they would do in their lifetimes, I sure wouldn't create a HELL for the majority of them to live in infinitely! That's not Love, that's sadistic. Therefore a truly loving god does not exist!
Quote:The sin is against an infinite being (God) unforgiven infinitely, therefore the punishment is infinite. Dead wrong. The actions of a finite being measured against an infinite one are infinitesimal and therefore merit infinitesimal punishment. Quote:Some people deserve hell. I say again: No exceptions. Punishment should be equal to the crime, not in excess of it. As soon as the punishment is greater than the crime, the punisher is in the wrong. ![]()
I work for the DoD. Many of the older crowd (i.e. command/bosses) are very religious. I do not deny if asked, but I do not publicly hang people for expressing their beliefs. All my family members, and a few friends know I am an atheist.

I don't believe there aren't any gods, I have no concept of what a god is or any of a god type attributes. I assess each claim as it's made, and accept or reject it based on its specific context. To say I don't believe in any god is intellectually dishonest as I don't know every claim. See: |
