Question on porn.
June 1, 2014 at 1:31 am
I don't think this needs to be in Area 69 but if mods disagree then please feel free to move it there.
Question:
Does Porn reflect sexuality in our world or does it influence it?
I am of the opinion it is the latter but there is also a case for saying that people are simply being a lot more open about their sexual preferences.
Note: I am not referring to gender preferences or orientation but to the sexual activities they are willing to perform.
This could take 2 forms. The first are activities that a person was aware of but wasn't prepared to do (take anal sex for example) and the second would be things that they were not aware of that they saw in a porn video and then decided to try.

Reflect it. No question. As it is produced by a member of society and it cannot exist on it's own externally, it technically can't be anything but a reflection.
But beyond technicalities, adventurous people seek adventurous sex and if they aren't aware of the possibility from external sources, they tend to discover them for themselves. Comfortable people seek comfortable sex, they may know the many things and positions they could do from an external source but they just don't care to try it. I would say that the vast majority of any modern society fits into one of the two categories and is not influenced much by porn, despite what the churches say.
We tend to forget that we are just animals. nothing more, nothing less.

I agree with Min.
On a side note, loving all the porn threads. Abortion was starting to bring me down.

Seriously feel so much better seeing three porn threads and zero abortion threads woohoo!
I would also say yes to both.
More and more people are watching porn, trying new things, finding out their likes and dislikes (as far as what the like to do and what they like to see), and giving feedback, then the porn adjusts accordingly and repeat.

I would tend to concur that it's both. Questions like this about human nature, particularly sexual, are rarely binary ones with simple answers.
At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist. This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair. Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second. That means there's a situation vacant.'

Just my thoughts here:
Porn is a "for profit" industry. Therefore, what is made has to "sell". If it does not, it will be made no longer.
So I would say that porn reflects rather than influences it; tho I suppose the influence may be a secondary effect of it.
People don't go to heaven when they die; they're taken to a special room and burned.
