There's a Mormon enclave up the road from where I live in England. I'd have thought they'd have targeted poor and more desperate areas but for some reason they set up shop in one of the most wealthy parts of my city where everyone is a skeptical asshole (right next to the university too and almost everyone around here is an academic of some sort).
Looks like they dropped the ball on that one. Wonder what their conversion rate is?

They might target poor and desperate people, but that doesn't mean that they want their HQ is a crappy part of town; having it in a reasonably affluent area tells people that they can afford the rent on their building and that they're posh and awesome. Plus, if they need to bring any poor or desperate people to their HQ they might use the location as an incentive to the person: "If you join us, you could get a nice house in this area of town, you could afford rent on a building like this, you don't have to live on the wrong side of the tracks in you join the Dark Sid--er, I mean, our church."
They might also have "branch offices" in the bad part of town and the one you're by serves as the area HQ building or something.

Stopped by Mormoms

First thing I tell them is that in concept I like it better than many other religions. Everybody gets to go to heaven, and there's the possibility of visiting their god on kobol. At this point I generally get a free book of mormon.
After that I lie and tell them I'm gay and willing to join... And I ask them about their stance on homosexuality.
Conversion attempts cease at this point and its fun to watch em find an excuse to get away asap.

There's a show on at the moment called meet the Mormons in the UK.
Pretty convincing at displaying the church itself as a cult employing obvious indoctrination tactics. They have a minder following the documentary makers to ensure they don't ask too many probing questions.
But I feel sorry for the guy/elder they're following (20 year old new missionary). It's pretty clear he's frustrated and wants to ask and answer questions of the documentary maker but is unable to because of the minder. I had no idea that missionary elders must stay in the same room at all times and contribute up to £6k to the costs of running the missionary! They're not even paid!
I mean fuck. This kid knows nothing other than the LDS having been raised as a Mormon but it's obvious he can't do anything about it.
