Ricky Gervais

RE: Ricky Gervais
I recall an episode of Waiting For God where Diana reported the manager of her retirement community as a 'Corgi Hater' just prior to a royal visit, which caused him a visit from the British equivalent of the Secret Service.

While extremely funny (Diana Trent is one of the best characters ever!!!) I thought it a bit much to pull the royals into the plot for a laugh.

We never 'added' anything. The language was ours to begin with, it's your lot that have taken out letters for no apparent reason.

A quick YouTube quote I want so badly for this forum sometimes is one where Diana says one of the best lines I've ever heard from a skeptic examining a Christian argument:

"Jane, did I just black out for 20 minutes while you explained your logic?"

Oh please, you guys didn't invent the English language. You cobbled it together from elements of all the other languages you viciously mugged and hacked apart.

That language you guys created is like a Tim Burton monster with bits and pieces sown on from here and there. I mean, really, how many innocent languages were murdered and mangled to create this polyglot tongue? By my count, Latin, Celtic, French, German, Norwegian and Greek were all pilfered along with God-only-knows how many others.

No wonder we speak such a fucked up language. I pity any foreigner who must surely pull their hair out trying to make head or tail out of spelling and grammar rules.

He's also obviously more clever than his TV persona would indicate as he used to be the producer of Ricky's radio show XFM. They really are good mates, it's not a beatdown of a crippled guy.

Oh, I wouldn't say Karl's putting on a character for the media. Tongue I'd say he's a relatively smart guy with some good insight, who is absolutely terrible at expressing himself properly, which is troublesome for him because of his intensely literal mind that doesn't do empathy well.

He's not stupid- I've been binge watching the Ricky Gervais Show recently Tongue - but he does have a collection of personality traits that makes him say hilarious things, which is only aided by the Ricky Gervais/Steven Merchant dynamic.

Tell me, what modern language didn't come about in such a way?

And English was spoken by the English first. As a language. Not by Americans. Get over it.

I wasn't necessarily insinuating that, I was just saying he's a lot smarter than most people give him credit for.

True but the English language is especially polyglot in nature, having not just one or two roots but many. In fact, I'm not even sure if English is classified as a Latin/Romance language or a Germanic language or perhaps Celtic?

So it's much worse than normal languages. Going Tu Quoque won't help us. Wink

Oh, trust me, I'm happy to give you guys the credit for this fucked up language we speak. It's YOUR fault. Wink

Oh, incidentally, my wife has predicted that the Diana and Tom characters are going to be the two of us in our old age.

That should tell you something about both of us.

Now, hand over your tea and God save the Queen. Angry

Don't you mean "Qeen"?
At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist.  This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair.  Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second.  That means there's a situation vacant.'

Bah, it's just part of the natural evolution of language.

Like, for example:
I doth posseseth honour
to,
I have honor
to,
i can haz onur

Actually, the original sentence would more correctly be:

I dost possess honour.

"Doth possesseth" would raise as many eyebrows in the sixteenth century as it does today and for much the same reason (i.e. it's gibberish).

When I was doing Greek at school 30 years ago, the Greek alphabet had:
3x different "i" 's
2x different "o" 's
2x different "s" 's
4x different accents on top of the letters!

Made no sense even then. I think they've simplified it since.
When I married my "Aussie" partner, she asked me to teach her Greek so she could communicate with my parents better.
I told her "forget it" and explained why.

And that's only the written, the spoken is just as tricky.
You can't really speak like a wog unless you are one...
