Hopefully, I'll tell you the difference between 'a', 'á' 'à', 'ã' and 'ê' (this last one is rare... I can only think of 2 words with that accent on an 'e' -> 'dêem', 'vêem', oh, oh... a third, 'têm') and all those wonderful diphthongs that kids hate in school! 'ão', 'ães', 'ões', etc...

That's the plan, at least. You guys think it may be worth the trouble?

Yes. But I warn you I am extremely untalented in this area. I have no ear for language. I often just can't hear the difference between a pronunciation someone is correcting for me and what it is they're saying. (This is a cause of much consternation for me when trying to pronounce people's names correctly.)

I will note that there is still no "I" in têm'.

I have something of an ear for mimicry, but when I took Spanish in high school (the last time I "studied" a language) we watched a video with the aim of distinguishing between South American Spanish accents - and they all sounded exactly the same to me. Almost everyone else could distinguished a couple from each other, all I heard was Spanish.

I was once in Madrid, surrounded by people speaking spanish and one of them was from Puerto Rico, I think. Everyone said he had a different accent.... I couldn't tell...
If you listened carefully enough, he was a bit easier to understand, as he spoke a bit slower, but that was just it. The words were the same, the sound was still spanish, which, to me, sounds like arabic: habla, habla, habla, habla.

I think I may have actually successfully loaded a video to Youtube for the first time in ages. Funny how severe I look. I don't feel that way on the inside. Oh, and I was using my computer to read the script from but it died midway. Winged it from there. (Repeated myself .. a little worrisome.)

As you can see I have no accent, just 'regular'.

When I get the time (meaning, when I have half an hour in front of the computer without kids and wife buzzing around asking what I'm doing, and while there's some natural light around, because the webcam is shite), I'll do a "accent" thingie where I'll show you guys all the cool sounds in the portuguese language that are remarkably absent from the english language.

Anyone else on the threads bilingual? As much as I would like to be, I'm not. I was once sitting in the waiting room at my physical therapist's office and couldn't figure out why I couldn't read the magazine I was holding - all the words looked "right" and should have made sense, but I couldn't read them! Then I realized it was a PEOPLE magazine written in Spanish. :p I've taken Spanish on and off since I was in about 2nd grade so while I can't speak or read it, it looks and sounds normal to me.

Then I went on a study abroad to Italy where I learned a little traveling Italian which totally fucked up whatever Spanish proficiency I still maintained from high school.

Oh, and the only thing I can say in German is "Ich habe meine Deutsch-Klasse heute Abend"

I can speak Spanish fairly fluently.

Naw those are parties that require walls, a pool, and perhaps an extensive backyard. Glass is only good for the neighbors. If we had nudie parties we'd invite you. Heck, we're having one tomorrow, how soon can you get here? Warning the guests are mostly going to be over 50.
