I've been wondering.
Why do gangsters, the bigger sinners and hypocrites seem to be more likely to become extremists e.g. terrorists? Do you think it's true?

It just seems to me that the idiots and bullies suddenly repent and start being so damn self righteous when they "grow up"

I think that those bullies just find a more "justified" outlet for their idiocy. Instead of tormenting others just for shits and giggles, they see violence as a way to promote the ultimate truth they were given by their religion.
Also since people like this tend to ultimately lack any critical thinking skill, they'll easily buy into religious bullshit without questioning anything, thus giving birth to fundamentalism.
