The Easiest Test

Here's a little test drawn up about 30 years ago. This is not a trick, there is no weird math going on with these numbers there's no hidden symbols or decimal points. Each number is separated by a comma and a space to help, this is not relevant at all. There are 2 simple rules
1. Add these number together from left to right, top to bottom as if you were reading a book
2. Do it out loud as quickly as you can
Ready? Go!
10, 10, 10, 1000, 10, 1010,
10, 10, 1010, 10, 1010.
What is the answer?

Nice trick, that is messed up. I got 5000 first time. And second time. Then I got 4,102 on a calculator. Then I got 4,100 on a calculator.
I don't like numbers anymore, I thought they were my friends.

I think it's the pattern. After awhile I wasn't really adding, I was recognizing the pattern. When I got to the end I didn't even get an answer at first because my brain was so tripped up. It didn't add up so my brain just quit on me for a second and I to just add it up before I got 4100. Haha This is a good one though.
I can't remember where this verse is from, I think it got removed from canon:
"I don't hang around with mostly men because I'm gay. It's because men are better than women. Better trained, better equipped...better. Just better! I'm not gay."

I cheated 
I first added up all of the 10's which total 100, then I added the 4-1000's and added to get 4100

No one really knows for sure, it is believed to be something to do with how we are taught to add numbers up in columns as children. The presentation is key and having to add them up out-loud quickly, somewhere in that mental process we turn the last 1010 into 1100, which changes how we remember the 3090 we are carrying in our memory to 3900 and somewhere along the line we end up with 5000.
But not everyone gets it wrong. It's not a mathematics issue, even math degree students get it wrong, it's something to do with how we manipulate numbers in our head.
