The evidence that religion is lacking is so overwhelming that "doubt" is far too weak a word to describe my feeling, which is mor akin to "conviction".

As for doubting god, it's incredibly easy to doubt him once you've loosened the shackles of social programming. Sheep do not understand the lure of feral life. Enjoy your shepherd; I'll enjoy feral living.

If the head god-botherer of England has doubts, maybe he is the wrong job!

My reaction was the opposite. Precisely the right man for the job.

Maybe God does not support his understanding of Him.

Can always count on grinch for the most charitable (to himself) interpretation.

If only that were true.

The beginning of true humility.

You have no idea just how ironic I find this. Yes, he's an honest guy. And yes he's showing some thoughtfulness. If humility is admitting you might not be right about god, he's got that too.
If there is a god, I want to believe that there is a god.  If there is not a god, I want to believe that there is no god.

ROFLOL

Indeed they are not, mutuially, exclusive.

It becomes easier to see that religion must be lacking in some way when it is clear god more than deserve all possible doubts.

Often times people doubt religion, when this doubt is married to an absolutist idea that their particular religion can be the only valid version of Christianity, that equals to doubt in God.

I kills me that it is easier for people to doubt God rather than doubt the idea that thier religion is lacking in some way. The two are not mutuially exclusive.

I don't think the bishop is experiencing a conflict between his religion and his belief in god. His description of his doubt suggests that to the contrary, he feels god is there waiting for him. Rightly or wrongly, he blames himself for the gaps.

The Church of England is not particularly dogmatic. To the contrary, in contrast with say, the pronouncements you make here, it's just plain wishy-washy.

There is nobody who doesn't doubt their beliefs. I have doubts not only about my faith, but about almost everything. If we didn't take any actions unless we were free from doubt, we wouldn't get anywhere. Atheists are smart enough to say they don't believe that God doesn't exist. That way they can't be accused of having any doubt about their position.

Maybe he's trying to increase church membership by approaching atheists.

You should read a thread we have around here that asks about theist's doubts. You would be surprised by what most of your co-religionists say. As for me, I'll keep not believing untill some evidence is brought to me. As to doubt, that only pertains to things that we do have some evidence for, but not enough to make a conclusion. Kinda like dark matter and other stuff like that. To all accounts, the amount of evidence for a god or gods is zero, I don't consider so-called holy books, edited to support whatever political status at a given time as evidence. Many moderate religious people bank on faith. Faith will never cut it for me.
