Don't Starve
October 16, 2014 at 9:07 pm
I've been playing this today because steam allowed me to do it temporarily. It's also on sale for 66%. Problem is that I find the hunger bar going down so low that I'm spending all my daytime hunting jackalopes, without much time to do anything else. It's quite the stressful game.
Does anyone else play it? Any tips? I've been trapping jackalopes and eating seeds, but I find myself unable to go out and explore and gather resources.

I play this game and love it. I die alot, but usually when I do something dumb like, stop looking for food. To get a good grip of food you should look in the green areas for carrots and berries; seeds aren't that great and are better used for planting in farms, but you'll get those a little later in the game. You shouldn't make fires your first couple of nights, but make a few torches and explore the edges of the different biomes during the night. You should use carrots and traps on the rabbits, don't spend time chasing them. If you get the Reign of Giants expansion there are Birchnut trees that give you nuts that you can eat after cooking. Oh, and you should always cook things before eating them; they will increase your belly meter a lot more.

I have gotten a little better at this game. I try to find pig villages to loot their berries. In one game I managed to get a bee box built, but I died not too long after. I found some ruins with monsters that had a chess motif. A horse robot charging me, and a bishop shooting energy balls at me.
Using traps is definitely better either baiting them with carrots, or putting a couple between the rabbit and his hole. It can sometimes be difficult to tell which hole the rabbit will run to, and sometimes I don't lay the traps quite right, but it's fairly effective.
It's definitely more difficult than Minecraft.

It's hard to last more than two weeks in this game, but I keep trying. Usually with Wilson, though I've tried some others I've unlocked. I've gotten up to the librarian.
About the characters, I think Willow is one of the better ones, because of the infinite torch, and sanity maintenance when around fire. Wolfgang would probably be good once you get a steady supply of food, though I'm not sure how useful someone is that's supposed to have an easier time fighting monsters, when he's afraid of monsters. The other ones are interesting too.

Wickerbotton is awesome; she has all the science machine recipes unlocked without building anything and the Alchemy Machine recipes unlockable with a science machine. You will need to build a Hatenator to build staves and amulets and whatever, so I don't think the Alchemy machine is even necessary.

Wickerbottom is definitely good in the beginning, though I don't usually have a terrible time finding gold to make the science machine in the first place.
I don't usually have a hard time finding flints for tools either, though there was one map where I couldn't find any for the whole day. I'm like this is a terrible start. I burned down a forest to relieve my stress and restarted on a new world.

I just like the fact that you can pick a few saplings, and grass plants and build a backpack right away.

The backpack is pretty nice. Sometimes I forget to switch to armor when fighting, though.

I'm expecting some steam points as payment for yard work. after I get that I'll buy this and play it some more. I think the main reason I don't play Minecraft much anymore is it just isn't very hard. Even in hardcore mode I'm not fighting all that hard just to survive. Even though Don't Starve is definitely a difficult game, it is definitely a game centered around just surviving. It doesn't take much to thrive in Minecraft. In Don't Starve it's hard to last a month.
