It depends what kind of Satanism you are talking about. LaVey's popular brand of Satanism shares that self-responsibility, and also a kind of Machiavellian utility, i.e. a resistance to letting others control your life with words you don't subscribe to.

Perhaps your pastor meant antitheism and not atheism. Satanism and antitheism go together rather well. Also, atheism is not a religion.

So you should be asking yourself why he thinks atheism is a religion. He's either ignorantly wrong or knowingly lying to you. Atheism is as much a religion as autism and priapism.

I don't know what satanism is, I looked into it once and it looked stupid so that's probably why I didn't remember it.
