I'm posting this for Jenny, since she asked about that song and, of course everyone else who's interested. So that you know what we were talking about. Maybe you can get something out of it. The really eery thing about that song, they published it on january 18th of 1933. 12 days before the Nazis took over.
Here are the lyrics in German and my translation Der Führer sagt: "Jetzt kommt der letzte Winter The Fuehrer says: There comes the last winter Nur jetzt nicht schlapp gemacht, ihr müsst marschier'n!" Don't give up, you have to march Der Führer Weg fährt voran im Zwölfzylinder The Fuehrer in front in his 12 cylinder car (he liked his big expensive cars) Marsch, Marsch, Marsch, Marsch, ihr dürft die Fühlung nicht verlier'n! March, march, march, march, you have to keep up Es ist ein langer Weg zum Dritten Reiche – It's a long way to the Third Reich Man soll's nicht glauben, wie sich das zieht! You won't believe, how strenuous this can get Es ist ein hoher Baum die deutsche Eiche The German oak is a tall tree (Oak is a German symbol for strength) Von der aus man den Silberstreifen sieht But you can see the wake of dawn from up there Der Führer sagt: "Nur nicht in Lumpen laufen!" The Fuehrer says: Don't go in rags Er hat's ja schon gesagt der Industrie: He already told it to the industry Wir wollen neue Uniformen kaufen – We want to buy new uniforms Der Hauptmann Röhm liebt uns nicht ohne die! Captain Roehm doesn't love us without us wearing them (Roehm, chief of the SA was gay) Es ist ein langer Weg zum Dritten Reiche – It's a long way to the Third Reich Ein bisschen Liebe macht ihn halb so schwer! A little love takes all the strain away Es ist ein hoher Baum die deutsche Eiche The German oak is a tall tree Und kameradschaftlich sei der Verkehr! And comradely shall be the intercourse (again Roehm) Der Führer hat gesagt, er lebt noch lange The Fuehrer says, he's got a long life Und er wird älter als der Hindenburg! He will outlive Hindenburg (The old president and field marshall, who ultimately helped him into the saddle) Er kommt noch dran, da ist ihm gar nicht bange! His time will come, no mistake about it Und drum pressiert's ihm gar nicht und dadurch So, he isn't in a hurry Ist es ein langer Weg zum Dritten Reiche – It's a long way to the Third Reich Es ist unglaublich, wie sich das zieht! You won't believe, how strenuous this can get Es ist ein hoher Baum die deutsche Eiche The German oak is a tall tree Von der aus man den Silberstreifen sieht! But you can see the wake of dawn from up there (November 20, 2014 at 6:33 pm)abaris Wrote: I'm posting this for Jenny, since she asked about that song and, of course everyone else who's interested. I can see it's satire but not much else.

Well the main context is that Röhm was gay
Which in and of itself is kind of tragic considering he was murdered and everyone was basically cheering them on for having killed the homo, even internationally, afaik. Of course, one has limited compassion for Nazis, but I *hope* the jabs in Brecht's piece were directed more towards the Nazis' hypocrisy than Röhms sexuality itself.
