He's a perfect example of what happens when you cling too hard to your - to borrow a term from the only Star Wars episodes that matter - delusions of grandeur.

I'm saying what if for you, I actually know God is real.
What if your parents are correct, if they are, then all the explanations of how the fear of hell will eventually go away, may very well be the Holy Spirit withdrawn from your life and I believe you know what that means.
I wanted to add from the other side of this problem you are facing, I really doubt your parents would ever give you a childhood to ruin your life, what do you believe.

My only advice is that you need to manage your expectations. Shaking off the shroud of oppressive religion doesn't happen overnight. Don't expect it to. It will take time. Be observant and open minded about everything. You'll notice that life makes a lot more sense without the dark cloud of the death cult obscuring your vision. Things you see and experience will confirm what you cognitively accept right now. And it will become a thing of your past. It will become something that you used to fear. Don't get down on yourself because you can't just slough off 20+ years of emotional abuse overnight.
"There remain four irreducible objections to religious faith: that it wholly misrepresents the origins of man and the cosmos, that because of this original error it manages to combine the maximum servility with the maximum of solipsism, that it is both the result and the cause of dangerous sexual repression, and that it is ultimately grounded on wish-thinking." ~Christopher Hitchens, god is not Great

Parents are quite capable of giving someone a childhood and then ruining their life with mental or physical abuse.
