Hey Alexis!
I went to high school in central Florida, and I still have family in the New Smyrna Beach area. Believe me, there are atheists everywhere, just a little more hidden! Welcome, and join in!
You in the panhandle or over Jacksonville way?

Welcome to the forum!
Out of curiosity, did you and your mother follow Church doctrine pretty strictly, or were you guys more of a "liberal mormon" kind of belief system? Just wondering because it must've been a hell of a culture shock deconverting if you held some of the more orthodox mormon views.

Hey Alexis, I'm new here myself.
Most of my time in Florida was in the Keys which is a totally different environment. I spent 3 years in Cocoa Beach too. It's a bit of a mix there. There is the young, party crowd mixed in with the older-than-dirt conservatives. I never spent any time in the northern part of the state but I remember all the fundie billboards driving through. Scary! It looked like southern Georgia up there.
Welcome aboard!

I am currently living in the glorious Bible Belt in a small town in north Florida. Thought I'd join this site to get some support and maintain my sanity, as I am the only atheist in probably a 100 mile radius. Looking for some intellectual conversation, since there's none of that here (;
I am an ex-Mormon, as of July when I received my resignation letter. All of my family is Mormon, although thankfully I've been able to get my mother out of it with me. Any other ex-Mormons out there?
I am an 18 year old female who's currently in college for a law enforcement career. I am an avid horse rider (western..barrels) and I own way too many animals.
Looking forward to meeting some of y'all.

Welcome! I used to be an agnostic in North Florida (Crestview, Niceville, FWB, Destin...I moved a lot). I didn't become an atheist until years later. But I bet you could use Meetup.com to find an atheist/atheist friendly group within 100 miles. I run one in the heart of SC that has events almost every week and more active members than whose names I can remember.
I'm not anti-Christian. I'm anti-stupid.

I moved from Jacksonville a few months ago out into the middle of no where kinda near Alachua. So I'm dealing with the culture shock of big-city to itty bitty town.

My mom was always a liberal mormon who was guilted into more strict adherence by her Nazi Mormon ex-husband. I gradually became more liberal with my adherence as I got older, thankfully, as I came to realize more and more of the Mormon standards were absolutely ridiculous and unnecessary. The culture shock has been more massive for my mother, who has been a member since she was 17. It was her whole life; I'm lucky I got out before I made huge life decisions based on the church.

Alachua is close enough to Gainesville, which has PLENTY of atheists.
My family owns some property in Lake City, and I used to party with some heathens down in Gator Town all the time!
