Well, maybe if you had done it right, you wouldn't have committed the sin of divorce. Ever think of that? You heathen, you.

I fucking hate that attitude it has to last forever or you are a loser. That utopia bullshit is what causes bitter divorces, custody battles and even violence.
It simply didn't work out. I think what she did was wise, she would have been miserable staying in it out of some stupid sense of loyalty and it it would have mad us more bitter and divided. I am happy for her and it worked out to some degree for me as well. I don't think I would have written all this poetry if I had stayed married.

It strikes me as weird too. Why exactly do I need to stay with someone for the next eighty years of my life if I get married in my twenties? And some people even expect you to marry the person before you've even lived in the same house with each other. No sex. No cohabitation that might tempt you to have sex. They say some couples can do it, but that's probably because they were browbeaten into staying together. This is why domestic abuse cases come up. they're married, and they're expected to stay married for the rest of their lives, so the friction bulds up until they start hitting each other.
If you can manage to get along for several decades, and die as good friends and lovers, then great. Good for you. Not everyone is the same, though.

This is distressing. I plan to get married soon, and I don't want a priest involved.
Fuck him.

Look up the history of the marriage license in America.
Marriage has always been a private contract between families. Not until the middle ages did the government start to regulate marriage (e.g. seeking permission to marry from your liege lord). Marriage licenses as a requirement was instituted in America to prevent miscegenation (interracial marriages), the whole concept of the marriage license is based on discrimination.
There are plenty of jurisdiction where simple cohabitation is enough evidence for marriage (common-law marriage).

Bollocks.
Every Western Nation requires wedding certification. I know we do in the UK and I looked at getting hitched in France at one time, (we were trying to get married in Paris but you need to live there for 6 months first). It's nothing to do with interracial marriages and just what every nation does to so they know your status for tax and census reasons.
You can fix ignorance, you can't fix stupid.

To make it clear I'm referencing America specifically which is what the OP is referring to. We have common-law marriage here, you need no license for that, if you live together then you are considered legally married.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Common-law_marriage
Quote:The original concept of a common-law marriage is a marriage that is considered valid by both partners, but has not been formally registered with a state or church registry, or a formal religious service. In effect, the act of the couple representing themselves to others as being married acts as the evidence that they are married. In jurisdictions recognizing common-law marriages, such a marriage is not legally distinct from a traditional ceremonial marriage enacted through a civil or religious ceremony in terms of the couple's rights and obligations to one another.
Quote:A true common-law marriage is a fully legal marriage that has been contracted in an irregular way. In the United States, nine states and the District of Columbia permit this irregular form of marriage. People in these true common-law marriages are considered legally married for all purposes and in all circumstances.

Quote:Oklahoma's statute requires couples to get a marriage license; however case law has upheld common law marriages in the state.

At the rate they're going soon all marriage will be illegal. Cause it's so sacred.
