Being "Moderately Religious" Makes no sense

Being "Moderately Religious" Makes no sense

I hear alot of people say that they are "moderately religious" which typically means they don't believe in as much of the "your going to hell" stuff that fundies do, and they typically are not so anal about their beliefs. But in order to be Moderately religious you have to admit that there are some things wrong with your religious in its raw natural form. So if you know there something wrong with it, then why be religious at all?

I guess one way to look at this is to seriously consider the following:

If it could be demonstrated that you fucked all wrong and could never procreate, would you simply give up fucking? Or, would you continue fucking because you could derive some benefit that lies outside accepted criteria established by others?

Believers can and do ascribe any number of benefits to their belief regardless of their adherence to literal interpretations of scripture. I think the video is attacking a false Scottsman dressed as a scarecrow.

I also don't understand attacking the position of those that aren't completely fucking nuts. Seriously, the believers described in the video are typically our secular humanist allies.

Other reasons for maintaining some semblance of belief, regardless of its validity:
- Cultural tradition
- Community norms
- Avoid family alienation
- Go along to get along

Also never forget that life for some is so shitty that any crazy idea suggesting that things could be better, even if in an afterlife, is something to cling to and live for.

What Cato said.

I think it is not really relevant if being a moderate is rational or not. What matters to me is that moderates are more likely to be open minded and usually don't want to forcibly impose their religion to the rest of the population, so it's something that benefits all society and we can't really complain.

The alternative would be for every religious theist to be a fundamentalist, which would result in far greater harm for all of us

My brain tells me that moderates are probably a sub-type of theists that are in the process of de-conversion, but unfortunately some of them die before they turn atheist. This transition seems pretty linear to me - From a generation of fundamentalists you go to a generation of moderates, and some will already be agnostics or atheists; from there on more people start leaving faith and only a minority will remain religious, until they fade away completely
Whoever fights monsters should see to it that in the process he does not become a monster. And if you gaze long enough into an abyss, the abyss will gaze back into you

The holy book certainly doesn't want you to be moderate. You are commanded to put your god above everything else, and god will spit you out if you're luke warm. The sad thing is that fundies are the closest to what the holy book wants out of its followers.

The rules have always been impossible to completely adhere to. It was done purposefully so people would continue being dependent on asking for forgiveness. Just like the guy you owe money to that will make sure you never pay your debt off.

Good video to watch, if you want to know how common the Jesus story really is.

I don't know about anyone else but I'm a LOT more concerned about how a moderate theist is going to vote than I am about the logical soundness of their woldview. They're the ones we really shouldn't piss off. They aren't going to vote for Rick Santorum so they're cool by me. Choose your battles.

Weed out the extremists, and the moderates will probably come around on their own. Or at least not get in the way nearly as much.

Like jesus being "a little dead" so whats a little dead anyways?
I know dead is dead and alive is good. So god really fucked up a lot
considering he had to die (a little) for us.
