How much of the news do you believe?
Inspired by this: http://atheistforums.org/thread-30574-po...#pid860514

Quote:Right now, you can look at the MSNBC file, which also includes NBC, and see how that network’s pundits and on-air talent stand. For instance, currently 45 percent of the claims we’ve checked from NBC and MSNBC pundits and on-air personalities have been rated Mostly False, False or Pants on Fire.

At Fox and Fox News Channel, that same number is now 58 percent. At CNN, it’s 22 percent.

It's a lot easier to trust news sources from countries outside the US. Do you trust the National Enquirer? If not, then why should you trust any other American media?

I trust NPR, Reuters, and the AP newswires.

I peruse RawStory a lot, but I don't take anything they post as "news." If there's a story I see there or on Buzzfeed that I want to know more about, I'll go to one of those three.
"There remain four irreducible objections to religious faith: that it wholly misrepresents the origins of man and the cosmos, that because of this original error it manages to combine the maximum servility with the maximum of solipsism, that it is both the result and the cause of dangerous sexual repression, and that it is ultimately grounded on wish-thinking." ~Christopher Hitchens, god is not Great

I tend to trust news stories in a general, as opposed to a specific, manner. This is mainly due to the infotainment industry's desire to be first with the story at the cost of accuracy.

By way of example, suppose the hypothetical news story is that a man, William Jones, robs a bank at 3:00 PM in Widget City. He shoots and kills the guard and one of the tellers, then escapes in a late model blue car with $5000 in cash. If this is the first account of the event, I would accept that a bank was robbed in Widget City. I reserve judgment on the details until later stories.

For the record, I mistrust EVERYTHING from Auntie Beeb until and unless confirmed by at least two other sources. I wouldn't believe the BBC if they told me water was wet.

Not to derail the topic, but - in your opinion - what was in the briefcase?

RE: How much of the news do you believe?
About 50/50. I'm always highly aware of reporter bias and agenda. If the truth of the story is of little consequence and sounds reasonable, then I'll accept it for the time being. If it's more important, I would check other sources to verify it before making a judgement.
