Brilliant new apologetic fact
Having a discussion on another forum, I am astounded at the following argument:

God created everything, but he didn't create diseases/cancer etc because these aren't "things".

So we end up with both the claim that everything must have been designed due to blah blah blah, followed by "except all the bad bits which weren't designed".

I thought at first this guy was just a moron, but this argument seems to not even come from him. It is in the form "evil is not a thing" which is slightly better until you try to insert real life examples in, after which it again fails.

When you get arguments like this, you realise they are just trying to say anything to avoid having to think about it and hope it goes away.

Hey, if we sound stupid enough, the logic will just float away! Right?

Right?

I think it stems from the mistaken belief that a bad thing is merely lack of a good thing. Specifically, evil is merely a lack of good. Of course, this isn't correct at all, but it won't stop them from saying that. For the record, diseases are things in the sense that the bacteria/viruses that cause them are. Having typhoid isn't merely a lack of feeling good; you have to have something else in you (i.e. salmonella) in order to get the disease. It doesn't matter how many times nor how forcefully you knock down these arguments; someone will just prop them back up again as though nothing happened. Dodgy

But what about love?
The fool hath said in his heart, There is a God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good.

Meeeep.

The correct answer would have been: but God didn't make love, God IS love!
The fool hath said in his heart, There is a God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good.

Creating something is not the same thing as designing something. It sounds like you might be making an error in thought by conflating the two.
