Have you ever sat through group therapy in a mental hospital and listened to people talk about their life and suicide? Trust me when I say that legalization would be very encouraging to them.

Actually, yes I have. And I don't think it would.

This is a legal and ethical problem - How do we know that if a child wants to die that's a legitimate consent? Kids make bad decisions everyday, that's the reason parents/tutors/adults make decisions for them all the time - To prevent poor management of life choices. An adult is fully mature (on principle) and aware of what it means to choose euthanasia - A child may be reasonably aware of what dying is but it's not the same. I have some doubts regarding this. I do think that if it's a 16 year old it's a bit different, but I'm talking about 5-10 year old kids

Based upon what?

I think we might be talking about two different things here. Are you saying that if euthanasia was permitted under the auspices of medical professionals, that suicide would increase amongst those who are mentally ill that go through the process of seeking out those medical professionals, or that suicide would increase amongst those who are mentally ill that don't seek out medical professionals (i.e. they do it themselves), due to the increased acceptance of suicide?

The latter. I'm not saying that it would necessarily be the result, but I have a very strong fear that it would.

Ah, then we were indeed talking about different things. Yeah I've no idea about how that factor would turn out, but hopefully a shift in the way society views mental illness entirely is underway as well.

Yes, absolutely. And I think anyone who wants to die should be allowed to kill themselves, terminally ill or not. (Though really, life is a terminal condition for us all. Your time is limited, and you will certainly die, sooner or later.)

Frankly, though, if I ever do decide to kill myself, I am not going to let a little thing like it being illegal to get in my way. They can put my dead body in jail if they wish. But in the case of the terminally ill, or those who are in incurable pain, they should be aided in their deaths, if they wish it.
