Yeah, but if they could prove it - we wouldn't be having a discussion. The whole concept of religion is that ultimately one has to believe, that long time ago, over the hills and far away a supernatural being contacted some barbarians, who were able to accurately and objectively pass that knowledge unaltered down through generations.
I know - to a rational man, it seems like a very long shot. But for semi-illiterate masses it sounds about as plausible as any scientifically proven fact. In either case - the methods of acquiring information are impenetrable to most, so they make a "blind" choice, usually opting for what's closest to what they were taught at very young age, by parents and other authority figures.
Let's face it - to most people both science and religion are forms of arcane magic. It's no coincidence that raising levels of education and scientific literacy result in decline of religion.

Really not a fan of these kinds of threads. There's nothing being discussed, it's just a circlejerk of 'look how dumb the religious people are, har har har'. The OP isn't trying to have a discussion, it's just two lines of nothing.

There's nothing to discuss, because you can't prove any god exists. if you could, this debate would have ended centuries ago.

I think that is one of the biggest questions in all of history. People say "Just have faith". It's kind of pointless. Maybe one day we can prove he doesn't exist but until he actually comes down and say "hey dude, im real." Then we will know he is true. Though some religions might scream and cry and say "well... well... well.. that's a demon, not God" I highly doubt if he *exists* would he come down and slam me or others. Like I said its Pointless to debate.

Yeah. Or you can choose to live in reality, and admit that you know damn well there's no one who will reach down and swipe a car out of the way when it's about to hit you, so you better act like an atheist if you want to live.

Right. Getting completely pissed or taking drugs all the time would also probably make me feel a darn sight happier, and allow me not to have to think about anything or take responsibility either.
But again I'll choose reality because my actions effect other people, not just me.

Don't you think though that it would be a bit boring of God to make Himself obvious enough that His existence could be proved with the scientific method? For there to be a question regarding His existence makes it a lot more interesting. Can you imagine if there was a scientific test for determining compatibility of partners, how terrible love stories would suddenly become? "And then we did the test, and it matched, so we married." The whole thing about a good story is that it has mystery, intrigue, highs and lows, twists and turns. For a theist, our relationship with God is the most fundamental relationship in our life, so it has got to be a good story really, hasn't it. Hence the need for there to be doubt regarding His existence, and for the often subtle, personal experiences which lead people to believe in God.
