This chasm could slam shut and they'll still simply deny it. It's as simple as not putting in an honest effort to understand the material. Refusing to do so allows them to cherry pick the bits they like (medications, yearly fly shots) from the bits they don't like, largely based on feeling. Much the same way they do with their religious texts.
