A little about me...
#21
RE: A little about me...
My 13 year old step son came to me last year and told me that he wished he had been born a girl. He hates his body. His self esteem is shot. I love him though and I tell him this all the time. I tell him that he has a right to his feelings, but not to hate on himself too much because there are still so many wonderful qualities about himself that have not yet been brought out. I encourage him and encourage him to do whatever makes him happy. Painting his nails and trying on makeup makes him happy. His mother has a problem with embracing his differences. This is new territory for all of us, but being supportive is the best thing we can do for him.

If there is anything I could do differently, I welcome your suggestions, Norman. I want my stepson to feel safe and supported and most importantly, loved.

@Judi

Well, I'd say telling him that it's ok, and supporting him is already an invaluable thing coming from you. It would be even more awesome coming from his dad. and that he's a person first and foremost and all that gender stuff is just a mess and society is bigoted about it, but that it might slowly change and he shouldn't let it get to him.

There are a bunch of awesome transwomen bloggers out there you and he might check out, e.g. at freethought blogs.

Can't. People like that make me cringe. Probably because of not being comfortable in my skin.

I don't know anything about dealing with transgender children and I don't know why you'd think I do. Have you tried searching online for advice, from transgender people or parents of transgender children?

Try Connor Franta or Troye Sivan. Watching their videos, you wouldn't even know they are gay from their personalities. It is just a matter of fact for them. Their videos are not about being gay. Their videos are about life and having fun and sharing with the world. Try it out.

The point is that until you see what people look like who are comfortable in their own skin, you'll never be able to cognitively accept that it is possible for you. Exposure therapy, of a type. Just try it.

"There remain four irreducible objections to religious faith: that it wholly misrepresents the origins of man and the cosmos, that because of this original error it manages to combine the maximum servility with the maximum of solipsism, that it is both the result and the cause of dangerous sexual repression, and that it is ultimately grounded on wish-thinking." ~Christopher Hitchens, god is not Great
