I don't know. I don't really care for the idea of marriage, but I'm also not against other people doing what they do because two consenting adults and all. It's none of my business.
Yeah, but if they don't want to get married (not everyone does) all they have to do is...TADA....not get married. They put me in mind of various pearl-clutching prohibitionists, it isn't enough for them not to smoke weed, or drink, or whatever, they aren't happy unless they can piss on everyone else's parade.
...it is common knowledge that the upper third, centered in Flagstaff, is Alta Arizona; the lower third, centered in Tucson, is Baja Arizona; and the middle third, centered in Phoenix, is Caca Arizona. Simple as ABC...

The really sad thing is I wanted to give a thoughtful response to the OP, but the trolling behaviour between then and now has prevented me from giving what shit I might have had.
At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist. This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair. Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second. That means there's a situation vacant.'

Kudos. I was thinking about doing the same thing, then I just told him to go fuck himself.

The Troll has been slain but I'll (sort of) take up his argument for argument's sake.
While I support everyone's right to choose whatever lifestyle they want, I don't have a high opinion of the institution of marriage. I think it's largely a security blanket for both sides. My bigger beef though is that society stigmatizes those who choose not to marry. That is not in anyone's best interest. It's similar to the social pressure to have children. The only people who do it should be the ones who genuinely WANT to do it. Reluctant marriage partners and reluctant parents alike suck. It does make great fodder for those who write soap operas though.

I see marriage as sort of an exercise in neolithic contract law.
Sure it can be misapplied. But it does partially protect the investment of both the society and the individual.
Establishing a partnership without enforceable ground rules is unwise whether it be for commercial or private purposes.
Adolescents and young adults are not mature or experienced enough to see where their best interests lie.
Allowing either or both of the participants to leave on a whim without either financial or social sanction may be
less damaging than forcing continuation when there are no children involved, but when there is issue, both
society and family should have a say over dissolution, usually disapproving.
People who don't want to follow the rules laid down by their community, should change them or leave and form their own.
So how, exactly, does God know that She's NOT a brain in a vat?

I don't know very many people who are happily married. But, that doesn't mean there are none. I don't see the point of marriage, I don't understand the need to bring the government into your love life. Then, things go bad, and they're brought back into your break up. No thanks.
Live together, sure. Beyond that, I don't see the need. I think our culture at least in the US, is so conditioned into thinking that dating should lead to marriage. If it was a successful paradigm, I think we'd see a lower divorce rate.
This may come as no surprise but did you know that the highest group of divorced people is???? Evangelical Christians. lol Oh the irony. Stats show that atheists have healthier and longer lasting marriages, than their religious counterparts.

Doesn't seem to be enough for about 55 to 60% of the population who get divorced. lol
