Atheists in Foxholes

RE: Atheists in Foxholes
I'd like to sincerely commend Secular Elf for his refreshingly mature response to a rules violation.  So many new people come here, go link-crazy, and get all snotty when the mods call them on it.

Well done, SE.  I hope you stick around.

Psst.... It's the asshats that don't intend to stick around that get the most bent out of shape about it.

I think I'd spend my time digging the foxhole deeper.  Arguably far more effective than praying to any fucking diety.

You check your rifle, you check your sights, check your water, hope that the indirect is dialed in (when you have it), and maybe, just maybe, you wonder whether or not the great god AGM is hovering overhead for epic justice!  Failing, that, perhaps one of his lesser angels....

Some nutballs might need the armor of heaven to feel protected, but if I can get all of that - Imma strap on a kevlar cup and shout "Hooah"

As Spooky commented upon...there are all types of folks in foxholes.  Imma be honest, I don't recall ever having gotten into a discussion about god while in a position.  It's anecdotal, wouldn't take it to mean much, other than the fact that soldiers can, sometimes,, have more pressing things on their minds.  I think this "no atheists in foxholes" nonsense, much like the vast majority of today's holiday...is for civilians, not joes.  When shit gets rough, we don't drop our weapons and pray to some fucking god to save us.....not even the believers do that......
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. You know, looking at pictures from WWI and WWII, I always find it kinda bizarre to see the priests on either side doing their show.  One side had to lose, even though god's ground personal prayed to the same deity for a win or a survival, which probably is the more important aspect for a grunt.

My granddad fought in the Austro/Hungarian army and they had it all covered. Priests, Pastors, Rabbis and Imams. The Russians on the other side also had the whole setup and they both lost.

RE: Atheists in Foxholes
Indeed, from the outside looking in, it doesn't seem that god really spends much time on who wins an engagement.  Some folks, though, and more and more civilian folks, seem to think it's important that the rights words are spoken at the outset.  I agree, I simply think that those words are "fire for effect"-anyone who speaks those words..in a foxhole, will see magic happen downrange...and feel thanks.  When I'm pissing myself, and the whole world is falling on my head, scrambling for salvation on the battlefield...I'm scrambling in my webs, for another bando of 5.56, not appealing to any interested ghosts.

I would suggest, that this is -also- what believing soldiers are doing, in that situation.   It's just so damned insulting, at it's very core, and I rarely feel insulted for the believers of the wold- so that's something.  The people who say that shit imagine themselves sniveling in the dirt, all hope lost, will broken, and conclude that anyone, no, no..everyone, would do...what they would do.....which is pretty god-damned shameful in context.

[email protected] Chairforce! You know I don't recall what I had put on my tags (had a few buddies with wiccan, one just said pagan), but I bet I was more concerned with whether or not they got my blood type right, lol, fucking typos can cost your life...!

Isn't the Air Force one of the more religious branches?
