Window-Dressing
So what is the point of this?

http://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-32875267

Quote:A pair of US fighter jets has escorted an Air France airliner bound for New York City after the flight was the subject of an anonymous threat.

Ah ha!  So terrorists have seized control  of the plane and are threatening to fly it into some ground target the the fighters are going to shoot it down?

No.

Quote:US officials said they had received a call claiming that there was a "chemical weapons threat" aboard the plane.

So other than making it look like the military was doing something what was the point of sending these two planes up there?

Reminds me of something George Carlin said long ago.  All this airport "security" shit is designed to do is give white people the illusion of safety.  And they are still doing it.

They have to defend the out-of-control defense spending somehow.

Yes, actually. A pair of F-16s were dispatched to New York after the first plane hit but didn't arrive in time to stop the second one. I'd sure hate to be piloting one of those fighters but you do what you have to do.
Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former.

But in this case they knew the nature of the "threat."
