Abolitionists tended to come from the intelligentsia. They made a big deal about the Emancipation Proclamation. What is less well known is that entire union regiments deserted in the wake of it. They had not signed up to free the slaves but to save the union. The ranks were also largely from the lower classes even in the union army.
