Jehovah’s seem to be trying to get my 85 year old father into their cult

RE: Jehovah’s seem to be trying to get my 85 year old father into their cult
When the individual franchise -isn't- self sufficient, the mother ship lends them some of that donated money.....which is then repaid, including interest, with...you guessed it...further donations.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

Oh whoops, I thought you said you'd watched a film about JW! I misread. I was suggesting he watched it. You said files Big Grin

Let us know how things progress, and maybe we can come up with more ideas.

Why does god need money for his own disciples? Why does god need to send assholes to your door instead of just talking to you himself, if he's already everywhere?

I'll definitely report back with some updates as soon as I have them.  I feel a lot better since I've been looking at this site JWFACTS.COM.  They had a short video clip that was great also.
I also am going to send my dad some links to thewatchtowerfiles.com.  Even though it doesn't seem  as informative the guy that runs it is an ex 24 year member.  And still unfortunatelly religious I guess.  But there is the personal side to the issue I wanted to capture.
I was going to send him the below links

Do Jehovah’s have the truth?

Jehovah’s Witnesses will be knocking on your door in the near future. What do they really believe?
http://www.jwfacts.com/pdf/jw-knocking-soon.pdf

"Jehovah's Witnesses are to refuse blood transfusions on the belief that the Bible forbids use of blood under any circumstance. Awake! 1994 May 22 p.2 admits that children of Jehovah's Witnesses have been losing their lives in support of this doctrine. The Watchtower stance is not only dangerous, but unscriptural and plagued with logical inconsistencies
There is a 5 minute video at the bottom of the page.  Which is very telling.  As well as the above quote. Which in and of itself would be all I would need to stay away from anything they teach.

Jehovah’s Witnesses Want You!
http://thewatchtowerfiles.com/recruitment/

Hi I'm Doug Shields. I was a member of the Jehovah's Witnesses for twenty-three years of my life. I finally realized that they didn't have "the truth" and I left the organization.
That decision cost me members of my family, my friends, my reputation, and in some respects, my identity. I had to rebuild my life one brick at a time.
Today I'm a happy, productive, and highly fulfilled person.
The purpose of this blog is to help others who are experiencing strained or broken relationships, self destructive behavior, addictions, depression, and low self esteem as a direct result of involvement in destructive mind control cults.

I hope you find this blog to be as helpful to you in reading it as is to me in writing it.

The situation you describe does seem suspicious.
I reject your reality and substitute my own!

You haven't mentioned this but it would be wise to do anyway.

Has he done any estate planning?  Medical proxy?  Living Will?  People always think "well, I'll just drop dead" and that will be that but it rarely happens that way.  First you get to be sick for a long time and then you die thanks to the joys of modern medicine.  Even something as simple as adding you or a sibling as a joint owner on a bank account would be a major help.

The thing is, coming from you it may not be persuasive but coming from a lawyer the reasons against failing to take precautions will sound a lot better.  Their job is to speak authoritatively about the law and state laws vary.

The kicker here is your throwaway comment that he doesn't seem as sharp as he used to be.  Listen to your instincts.  You're probably right.

They tried something similar with my elderly aunt.

At first they asked if they could come in for a chat and she agreed with the stipulation that they didn't push their beliefs.

That was fine for the first couple of visits.

Then they started trying to read passages of the bible to her during their visits.  She said no each time and it ended.

Then they became more insistent and she became more resistant.

Finally she told them she had absolutely no interest in joining their group but they were welcome to visit.

She never saw that particular group again.

As Min said, they target the elderly and the vulnerable.  They're a cult, certainly.

I'm a motive skeptic, so the money issue jumped out. I'm on board with Min and the others making sure his finances are not at stake. If the money issue is resolved and they still come around and your father enjoys it, let it continue. Taking pleasure away from the elderly in an attempt to help, do good or protect them happens all to frequently. Don't go behind his back, think of how you would feel if your child did that to you.

Oops, should have started out with Welcome!

being an MD and dealing with death daily my dad of course has a will. Done by an estate lawyer. He's always stipulated don't resuscitate me. So I would be suppressed if that wasn't in writing somewhere.  He rummaged through all his belongings almost ten years ago getting things into order as much as he could. He's been bugging me to do this though (a will) and I've been dragging my ass.

Unfortunately I pretty much know I am right about my "instincts" While his memory seems better than mine many times it's simple things like working together outside on projects which he still likes  trying to do.  Were like laurel and hardy.  If I try to explain a simple concept to him it always leads to confusion and vise versa.  He blames me for it. If I ask him some obscure question about heart disease.  Information just flows out of him like a picture of water into a glass. And I am always enriched from the experience.  So he still has it together on a lot of levels knock on wood.  Others he's not all there.  And he seems a lot more impressionable than he used to be. And even expressed some concerns to me about my atheism which never seemed to bother him in the past.  In the past he would have understood exactly what type of people these people are and run them the fuck off.

Yes that's exactly the approach they seem to be using on my dad.  The impression that they just want to engage in harmless chit chat. But I suspect the reality is if they know  there is no hope for getting you into their cult they focus their efforts somewhere else.  Funny thing how old people get lonely so much so that they would let dubious people into their lives.  Hope I never get like that. Actually what am I talking about.  I've already done that.  But never religious kooks.

That is the difference between long-term memory and short-term memory and most likely an indicator of Alzheimer's which at 85 is no surprise.  My dad died at 93 and he could remember his unit getting the shit kicked out of it at Monte Cassino like it was yesterday but whenever I took him to the chiropractor we'd always go to the same restaurant and every time, without fail, as we were leaving he would say "this is a nice place...we should come here again."

He was a man who could fix anything mechanical yet we knew it was time to put him in Assisted Living when we came home to find him on the front porch.  He told us he was locked out.  He had his keys in his pocket.  He could not remember how to open a lock.  It was Arizona and it was winter so not so bad but had he done that to himself in summer out here it could have been very serious.

I'd like to tell you there is hope but it does not get better.  My brother and I joke that we'll be sitting in a corner drooling into a cup and everyone else will be trying to figure out what the hell to do with us.
