Am I still an atheist if I believe in a higher being?

Seriously?

Ok realistically, I don't really think there's a being up there, I just accept that it's a possibility. RE: Am I still an atheist if I believe in a higher being?

The difference between deism and theism is that in a theistic religion, people believe in the existence of a specific God like Allah, Jesus or Vishnu. Deism is just a belief in a higher power because you see that as the most likely explanation of why we're all here.
For all practical purposes, deists, pantheists, agnostics and atheists have a lot in common because all of them live their lives assuming there is no personal God who cares if you're masturbating right now. All have a secular sense of morality and are likely to oppose religion in government.
Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former.

If you were simply making a vague statement that there may or may not have been someone or some force that was involved in the creation of the universe and you consider the notion irrelevant because it cannot be known, I would say yes. I would consider you to be an agnostic atheist. If the usage of the word may means that you believe that there is probably an intelligent force or being responsible behind the creation of the universe, that does not intercede in human existence, then you may be a deist. |
