Did you know there are still some people who believe a magic man who created and governs the universe decided to favour one teeny tiny planet over all the others, so much so that he obsesses himself over what people do with their genitals and even went so far as to send a bit of himself to sacrifice to himself for some sin that apparently happened thousands of years earlier that he was basically the cause of, and THEN - and get this - the magic man spin-off rose from the dead, thereby negating the whole pointless thing?!

No, I don't think it's that simple. Being black may play a role, but I'm convinced it is because he's moderately progressive on social issues. Health insurance, gay marriage, not GungHo enough when it comes to shoot everything that moves. Even a little bit for gun control. These are the main issues in my opinion, which I find even more firghtening than a dose of good honest racism.

In my five years in Texas I heard several times from white "Christians' about that N***** Obama. I was gobsmacked. And this perennial shit that he's not American!! He was born in Hawaii.

For that matter, as a Brit, I couldn't care less where somebody was born, as long as they had become a British citizen and understood British culture, language and history before running for office. I then couldn't care less if they were black, gay, female or whatever as long as their policies were good for my country both on the global stage and here at home. I accept that Britain is a mongrel nation, we have always had immigrants we are: celts, anglo-saxons, Romans, French and now a whole heap more. You only have to look at the town and village names over here to see this wonderful diversity.

But when living in America I never understood why Obama was so despised in some quarters for his attempts to spread social reform, healthcare and accept American diversity, be it Mexican immigrants on the border, access to affordable healthcare or inclusion for LGBT in modern society in an inclusive way. I lived there, but America will always be an enigma to me. I have profound respect for America, we share a lot in common and I have very many American friends, but the religious right, the neocons, the profound racism and the strange belief in exceptionalism do baffle me.

God (who doesn't exist) doesn't bless the USA. In my own way I do, but as part of the globe we all have to grow together. BTW, these types of attitudes exist in Europe too, and I am DEFINITELY not anti-American. I just prefer the view that is warts and all.
