On the topic of OS switching. Today I changed the os on my netbook from xubuntu to arch. The machine used to run gentoo. Gentoo was nice. Rapid boot times and a slim installation. Unfortunately that broke when i tried to upgrade it but i didn't have the time to fix it. I put xubuntu on it the night before a presentation where i needed the computer to control a remote program. I don't like the ubuntu family, but i put it on as it typically isnt hard to setup. However, xubuntu used too much memory and the computer would often swap.
Now in an episode of procrastination ive put arch on it. It's a very nice os. It seems to consist of only a kernel and a package manager by default. I've now set up a full desktop environment. This has taken much less time than it did on gentoo. It's so slim, few services start up at boot. The netbook now loads from the boot menu in around 15 seconds.
In all, I'm very happy with arch. I'm thinking about putting it on my other computers.

Ubuntu 10.4 (latest) is immense.

Second that, solid release. It finally kcocked Suse off my top spot, distro wise.

Tthe upgrade to 10.04 stopped my Firefox from working.

Odd. I assume you've tried purging it and reinstalling? Have you tried downloading the latest build from the Firefox website and installing that?
