Global ocean discovered on Saturn moon
Cassini finds global ocean on Saturn's moon Enceladus:

Quote:A global ocean lies beneath the icy crust of Saturn's geologically active moon Enceladus, according to new research using data from NASA's Cassini mission.

Researchers found the magnitude of the moon's very slight wobble, as it orbits Saturn, can only be accounted for if its outer ice shell is not frozen solid to its interior, meaning a global ocean must be present.

The finding implies the fine spray of water vapor, icy particles and simple organic molecules Cassini has observed coming from fractures near the moon's south pole is being fed by this vast liquid water reservoir. The research is presented in a paper published online this week in the journal Icarus.
At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist.  This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair.  Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second.  That means there's a situation vacant.'

Enceladus, such a small and beautiful moon! That's fantastic news, although - where did we previously think all the geysers come from?

Latest news!
Nasa cannot rule out that under that ocean there lives sharks with laser guided sight... until proven otherwise!

time to send a probe and have it do some "fishing" one is finds bacteria or any sort of complex organism it will finally shut up theologians.

The fuckheads will simply incorporate it into god's "plan" and find a suitably vague bible verse to torture into saying what they want it to say.

We've seen this act before.

RE: Global ocean discovered on Saturn moon
Fantastic. I hope they discover life, even simple bacterial life (though it would be much cooler if there was an advanced race of Plesiosaurs down there). I hope it happens in my lifetime, the sooner the better. I would love it to be proven life is abundant in the universe!

It will be interested, if we ever do find life outside of earth, what the religious nutters will come up with to explain it. Did Jesus drop a few life crumbs on Saturn's moon by accident?

The south polar area geysers were believed to be plumbed to a regional undersurface water source.  That water is now revealed to be global in extent, and not just regional.

The amount of work involved in characterizing the surface libration was considerable.  The science team forgo other interesting observations of other bodies in the Saturn realm to get the raw data for the analysis.

I'll admit still being wistful some of the other objects might have been studied more.  More close flybys of Mimas, Hyperion and Iapetus in particular.  With the subsequent surprise at Chariklo, there might have been some additional close observations of the F-ring and some of the 'rocks' near the rings, and if the equatorial ramp on Iapetus is demonstrated to be a decayed ring system, we might regret not studying that more too.

The science mission was all about trade offs, hate second guessing them at this point.  At least there were some significant results from the large expenditure of Cassini resources on Enceladus.

Sadly, a follow on mission is likely going to be expensive, and something we will have to wait a long time for.
The granting of a pardon is an imputation of guilt, and the acceptance a confession of it.

Would be much easier to send a probe to one of Jupiter's moons (e.g. Europa) for that purpose, by a big margin. Seems like they're close to one another, because of how far away they are from us and yet are "adjacent", but in fact, they are at 5.20 and 9.58 AU, making Jupiter closer to us (at 4.20 AU) than Saturn is to Jupiter (at 4.38 AU).

(Distances assume the planets are all "in a straight line", of course.)
A Christian told me: if you were saved you cant lose your salvation. you're sealed with the Holy Ghost

I replied: Can I refuse? Because I find the entire concept of vicarious blood sacrifice atonement to be morally abhorrent, the concept of holding flawed creatures permanently accountable for social misbehaviors and thought crimes to be morally abhorrent, and the concept of calling something "free" when it comes with the strings of subjugation and obedience perhaps the most morally abhorrent of all... and that's without even going into the history of justifying genocide, slavery, rape, misogyny, religious intolerance, and suppression of free speech which has been attributed by your own scriptures to your deity. I want a refund. I would burn happily rather than serve the monster you profess to love.
