No life after death

Quote:Am I the only one who finds the fact that there is no life after death comforting?

Probably not. Can't say I do especially, although it's more attractive than the idea of hell or an eternity with the nasty prick of the Abrahamic faiths..

Oblivion is not an experience. The way I feel about that likelihood varies with mood.

Addendum: Pedantic point; ''no life after death' is an assertion and an opinion, not a fact. So far the assertion is unprovable and unfalsifiable. That I do not believe due to lack of evidence does not necessarily make my disbelief true. EG: "There is no evidence for an afterlife therefore there isn't one." --absence of evidence equals evidence of absence ,a classic form of argument from ignorance..

If I had to spend eternity with my grandmother glaring at me I would go mad. I am glad there is an end. The only afterlife is the ones we leave behind and for those people on that show '19 Kids and Counting' they are going to live forever.

I like to think that as my body decomposes the energy and nutrients that are released and absorbed will provide life for many organisms.

i guess that's a nice thought but have you ever heard Dane Cook's take on atheism? I never found my fate of decomposition after death particularly fulfilling but after Dane Cook's stage comedy on 'When An Atheist Sneezes' I'd be ashamed to say anything along the lines of finding my death rewarding to the environment in any way. I'm going to copy paste the lyrics to his stage act on atheism on a different thread: http://atheistforums.org/thread-3622.html

I just think that without hell there's no reason to fear death at all. And I don't. If I could have eternal paradise after my death I'd like that, yeah - I don't know how I couldn't not like that idea.... but I don't bother wishing or craving for things I don't believe I can have. And not fearing my death at all is certainly way better than thinking I might go to hell because of some God twat.

RE: No life after death
I'm sure that I'd fear death a lot more if I believed that something came after it. I'd be worried about going to hell, or purgatory, or getting reincarnated as a dung beetle, or whatever. Especially since I'd think that what sort of afterlife I got depended on my earthly behaviour (and, worse still, maybe even my thoughts). Fuck me, but that would be paranoia-inducing. Thanks, but no thanks.

As it stands, of course, I'm an atheist. And what is there to fear? I'll simply cease to exist as me, and the molecules that make up my body will rejoin the cycle of nature. Some will become nutrients for plants or earthworms, and eventually some will be incorporated into other people. Now that sounds much better.

Plus, of course, its a view of the world thats in accordance with Science, and doesn't rest on delusional beliefs or half-baked philosophical 'arguments'. Which has to count for something.

Nope, I find it comforting too. Being dead is very much like being asleep. Just no dreaming. I see it as being free from pain, free from trouble and such. From the world's point of view, it is rid of you and from yours you are rid of the world. Billions of years will pass and you wouldn't notice a thing. We have been dead for billions of years and yet no one suffers any ill effects of that. We have each missed billions of years and no one is bothered by that. Our existance is temporary and once our time is up we go back into oblivion but this time forever.
This is why you need to live your life well, because you won't get another chance.Big Grin
Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence - Carl Sagan

Mankind's intelligence walks hand in hand with it's stupidity.

Being an atheist says nothing about your overall intelligence, it just means you don't believe in god. Atheists can be as bright as any scientist and as stupid as any creationist.

You never really know just how stupid someone is, until you've argued with them.

RE: No life after death
I find an eternity of non-existence to be a blissful state bringing a new meaning to the phrase "Rest in Peace", the world and its problems cease to have any meaning at that point. Yet conversely, it is the most conceivably frightening state imaginable to theists the world over, more so than Hell or their douchebag God-concept rejecting them as 'not worthy of immortality' or preservation.

I've no reason to fear it, anymore than pre-life which is irrational to be worried about, ours is a brief moment in the lifespan of the universe which is why I'll cherish it because our lives are infinitely more valuable to us than non-existence, because of this I find acts of intentional murder to be so reprehensible and equally worthy of a death penalty.
