Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors
October 9, 2015 at 6:37 pm
For those who think that only humans (and, apparently, only humans who obey one particular god) can be moral, caring, social animals, I stumbled across a few videos I think you should consider. Some are science, some are just amazing things to observe.
Pygmy Chimpanzees/Bonobos:
Orangutans:
Gorillas:
If you cannot see humanity in these creatures, I'm not sure I see humanity in you.
A Christian told me: if you were saved you cant lose your salvation. you're sealed with the Holy Ghost
I replied: Can I refuse? Because I find the entire concept of vicarious blood sacrifice atonement to be morally abhorrent, the concept of holding flawed creatures permanently accountable for social misbehaviors and thought crimes to be morally abhorrent, and the concept of calling something "free" when it comes with the strings of subjugation and obedience perhaps the most morally abhorrent of all... and that's without even going into the history of justifying genocide, slavery, rape, misogyny, religious intolerance, and suppression of free speech which has been attributed by your own scriptures to your deity. I want a refund. I would burn happily rather than serve the monster you profess to love.

I posted similar vids quite often. There's quite a lot of interesting research going on these last years. But don't hold your breath for any of the "humans are special" crowd to even take a look.
And I wouldn't call humanity what you see in these pictures. It's rather the humbling fact that we aren't the only ones with feelings and a sense of morality.

I disremember who, but I recall a primatologist putting as 'Chimps are what we are. Bonobos are what we aspire to be.'

Not entirely sure, but I think, it was either Frans de Vaal or Brian Hare.

Wow. Yeah that's exactly how I see it. Couldn't have put it better... except some of us seem to revel in being chimp-like.

The whole koko vids are humblimg. There also was Michael, who was also able to sign and told about his mother being killed by poachers. Sadly died in 2000.

No, but that was amazing. I did see this, when Anderson Cooper of CNN met bonobos who can communicate via sign-boards:

Holy crap... I was looking for the video of Michael, if it existed, and I found this. It's 2 mins, but the last 30 seconds blew my mind.
