To illustrate the importance of this distinction: The other day, I told my Grandma that I'm now an atheist. She was furious: "what?!" She said - "isn't it bad enough that you are atheist, now you're *an* atheist as well? This goes too far!" And then she disowned me. True story!(*)

(*) for suitable meanings of "true" and "story"
