Programming Language Swift Poll
#11
RE: Programming Language Swift Poll
I've only ever learned how to code in AS2 and AS3. C++ was always way over my head so I imagine this one would be too complex for me as well.

I'm only a few months into learning HTML/CSS. At the moment, JavaScript looks to me like the vomit of a madman who ate a dictionary and an algebra textbook.

So yeah...nah.

JavaScript is good, but jQuery, at least to me, was the thing that let me really go crazy. Who new one could achieve so much without any postbacks?

If you can code Flash, I think you are farther along than you realize.  I freaking HATED trying to use AS.

The good news is that HTML5 allows you to do a lot of that stuff without the extra proprietary software.

I absolutely love HTML5. At least as far as videos are concerned, it's a much more elegant and resource-efficient solution compared to Adobe's flash player.

If by "good" you meant "shit, but it's the best tool we have", I would agree.

Haha.  That's why I right away said I prefer jQuery to vanilla jscript.  But let me say this: the day I gave up on pure server-side and shifted more of the juicy stuff to client-side is the day I started feeling you could spend time doing cool stuff instead of just spending 6 hours a day fucking with hacks to make the CSS look right on both IE and Firefox.

Remember that?  The days when nothing fucking worked on more than one browser?  HTML5 and the new CSS has almost killed those days, and good riddance.

And that's why I'm suspicious of new proprietary systems: because if they succeed, they are going to do what Microsoft did: deliberately break standard to make people choose their flavor.  And that's what Apple, 100%, wants to do: kill Android and Java, and then fuck us all with their standards-breaking bullshit.

Yeah.  I have to tell you, I was PISSED when Android officially stopped supporting Flash.  It meant that my website was broken for Android phones-- and I live in Korea.

And then the clouds parted, and HTML5 shone through, and I said. . . yesss, I get it now.  Fuck Flash, and welcome shared standards.

No, I definitely get that. Javascript is a necessary evil, perhaps less necessary with HTML5/CSS.

I'm not a fan of allowing arbitrary code execution on the client side. This is not specifically a fault of Javascript - any inadequately sandboxed language running in the browser is a shit sandwich ready to be served.

Flash needed to die a horrible, horrible death.
