Loving God More Than Your Family & Spouse

Like love and intimacy . I just fail to see why the vast majority of people on this planet continue to do this.

It's something I had a really hard time with in confirmation class. It's one of those things I just accepted as "true", but I wasn't particularly comfortable with it.

My Mother spent most of her life either on her knees, praying; sitting and reading her Bible; or listening to radio preachers.  Her entire focus was on god and on her church, and how to "get to heaven".  And now that she is a woman in her 80's, she has disowned or alienated most of her family, all of her husbands' family, and all of her children.  Because if she believed that if someone was behaving badly, and she didn't take a stand against it and remove them from her life, she would burn in hell for eternity after she dies.   That's how people love an imaginary friend more than real people.

This is what happened when christian yokels got ahold of asceticism and stoicism, they fucked it up.  Then they told other people to fuck it up - because they didn't know any better.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I was taught that it would actually IMPROVE your marriage, because your marriage is then based on the "solid rock" of god as opposed to fallible human desire. I found myself worrying that I would, basically, love my husband (then boyfriend) "too much".

Thank goodness I'm passed that, no way was that good for the relationship.

Victims of fantasy delusion programming. However, if they are happy being deluded, I don't need to understand or insert my position. I just accept that it works for them (at least in the moment) and move on.
Being told you're delusional does not necessarily mean you're mental.

Ironically, a foundation based on faith is not as good as a foundation based on realism, despite what the bible says.

People do this all the time in other contexts.  Some people love the "sense of reward" [an intangible entity] of their job more than their families.

You've now equivocated, defining 'imaginary' the same as 'intangible.'

Again you've equivocated, defining something that is 'intangible' as 'imaginary'.

If you are defining God as imaginary (God is intangible and intangible entities are imaginary) then it is understandable why you can't understand why a person would choose to love God more than a spouse.  By your own standard you would also then have to ask the question: how can a person love in the first place, how is that possible?  After all love is an intangible entity and therefore imaginary.

When one loves someone , it can be felt with your sensors right ? Vision , hearing , touch etc.

When you love God , or if God loves you back, with what can you feel ?

You understand christians better than you think you do......

Sir, the ultimate goal of a believer of God is to find eternal paradise after death. Achieving nirvana means one seizes to exist. They are two very different goals.

To me, I feel I am attached to things and when I don't have them I suffer. No matter how successful one is, when we die we don't take anything with us. How much we earn, houses, cars , fame, success , all of that is temporary. In the end it's about how good one lived their life.

It's just a common religious theme, as common as the religious not realizing how common their religious themes are.

Two different ideas of paradise, same goal, different ad copy.   To you, the difference means something, and so a comparison blindisdes you.  To me, the difference means nothing, so I see them both for what they are.

Of course there is, you just explained it, Nirvana.  Nirvana is the carrot for which you live your life as a buddhist, as heaven is the carrot for which christians live theirs.  You're both told that the way to get this carrot is to cease clinging to this world. It's not that difficult to understand........even if it -is- difficult to understand why either of you bought into it. "Heaven" is, effectively, the christian term for "Nirvana". The wife, in this example, is just another attachment preventing a person from achieving nirvana. Help clear that up for you, or are you committed to "not understanding" those silly beliefs which you share with other silly believers?

I have more groundbreaking news for you, both faiths make those same promises about the "next life"....because they are incapable of delivering in this one.

I don't know if Christians are told not to cling on to this world but yes a Buddhist' s path is to free from attachments. However we Buddhist are not asked to obey anyone or rules. Path is shown to us and if we want to live our lives to attain Nirvana or if we don't want to find enlightenment, that's our choice. Like I once told you sir, regardless of living ones life for a goal or not , living righteous till one dies is the path I follow. Someday when I look back, I have a sense of satisfaction that I did good to the world around me.

Christians are not saved because they follow the rules, but by their faith.  God is supposed to show them the way, he's a personal god.   Catching a pattern here, everything you feel differentiates your faith has an analog in theirs.
