Being Jewish is as much ethnic and cultural as it is religious. So I see no contradiction.

My wife self-identifies as Jewish - her parents are Reform and observant, and one of her brothers is a rabbi. She speaks fluent Yiddish and a little Hebrew, and makes a reasonable effort to keep kosher, but she's not nuts over it (she refers to ham as 'Jewish salmon'). Culturally Jewish and atheist at the same time doesn't seem that bizarre. Apparently my family has been Christer for centuries, yet here I am.
The granting of a pardon is an imputation of guilt, and the acceptance a confession of it.
Whatever people want to identify it, as long as it has some cultural basis is fine IMO.
