I figure if I ever do get married, we'd both keep our own names.

Marriage Surnames

Mine is unique enough that in every instance of coming across someone with my last name I have discovered that we are related with a common ancestor only about three generations back (my great-gandparents' generation). Heh... mine is unique enough that I grew up in the same house with everyone I have ever found that shares that name and is currently alive. RE: Marriage Surnames

When I got married (I have a wasband now), I hyphenated my last name.
I regret both getting married (to that guy) AND hyphenating my last name. 19 letters long. 20 with the hyphen. When I sign my name, I make something sort of like an incomplete star pattern. Who the hell would actually take the time to fully sign each letter in a 19 letter long name? Not me. That's for sure. I heard once that there's some sort of rule in Germany that you have to have a legible signature, like write out all the characters in your name so it can be read (instead of what I do where I make the first letter, intend to make it legible and then end up with a wavy line by the end). I have absolutely no idea if this is true.

My mother didn't take my father's last name, they just kept their last names separate. My mom gave me her last name, and I opted to keep "Love" over "Van vleck" because Vleck sounds like yech. Also there's a porn star with my name. Which makes me hard to look up, and means my name is fucking awesome.
When I got married I opted to keep my name as well, but our kids took my husband's name until we split up and then most of them took my name. Love is a fucking awesome surname I must say. I think choosing which one you like better is the best option. My youngest daughter and her wife chose to take the name "Love" as well, because it also gives a double meaning for them to the meaning "Love Wins". Everyone should decide for themselves what's best. Fuck tradition.
Don't do it.
If I married a man I'd have bigger problems to worry about (such as achieving a state of sobriety) than what my name is!
