Divide up Religion Forum?
June 30, 2010 at 5:51 am
The Religion forum is by far and away the most active section of the site- it has nearly twice as many posts as any of the other sections.
And another thing: We seem to be getting a lot of new members. So we can expect more posts, especially in Religion.
I'm wondering whether it might be a good idea to divide up Religion into two or more forums. For example, we might have 'General Religious Issues', 'Christianity' and 'Other Religions'. It could make navigating the forums a bit easier.

One thing that mildly concerns me is the speed with which threads get demoted to page 2 of the Religion Forum, and consequently get forgotten. Currently, if a thread doesn't get a comment for c. 5 days, its on the second page. That isn't very long.

I mean't something like that, don't have to have that many subforums Eilonnwy, just take couple out of that and transfer them onto the forums.

There is already an Atheism section, so we are good there. And there's already Philosophy and Science sections.
Polytheism
Subforms: Hinduism; Old Greek/Roman Gods, Other Polytheistic Religions
Monotheism
Subforms: Christianity/Catholicism; Islam; Judaism; Pastafarianism; Other Monotheistic Religions
General Religion Discussion:
Subforms: General; Religious Texts; Deity Talk; Morality, Laws, and other Misc. things
That's how I think it should look....

Thats sorta what we have at the moment. My concern is that the 'religious bullshit' section is too big. Experience shows that if a thread goes off the front page, its dead- thats a general rule thats true of all forums everywhere. The way things are, threads are going dead too quickly imo, and given that we're attracting new members all the time its only gonna get worse.
The rational solution seems to me to divide up the religion forum into maybe 3-5 subforums.
The fact that this has become an issue is a tribute to the success of the site. If there weren't so many new threads, there wouldn't be a problem.
