Perhaps you can whip these laggards into shape! Good lord, where would these murderous bigots be without you?

Slackers? With such death toll?

If it is a joke then it's a poor one.

Why are so many people afraid to examine propaganda claims?  Religious folks swear by the imaginary deities and ethnocentric religious fairy tales.  People go bat shit crazy when someone questions the "holocaust".  Hell, we have more WWII "holocaust" museums in the US than shopping malls. Talk about brainwashing.  Herzl's plan worked perfectly.

Some people really get pissed when others cast doubts on their favorite fairy tales.

You know, I've had to listen to a lot of talk about Nazis over the years. I swear, this is the first time someone suggested that the Holocaust was kinda half-assed. You think you've seen it all! But it makes total sense of course... if there is one survivor, the caust's not technically "Holo". Think about it!

Can we just say it's the thought that counts and stick with the holocaust? Because as impressive as the death numbers are (one out of three world wide) the tricaust just isn't going to catch on.

Yes, you can't ask for too much, a Nazi is no Übermensch!

Btw, the state I grew up in was the first in the Reich to be proudly declared by the Governor to be free of Jews. That's not something you just brush aside. It's hard to come to terms with.

I think Germany feels way too guilty about it and it's bad in the long-term. It was proven that people will respond to authority in disturbing ways. What happened with Nazi Germany isn't necessarily the German people's fault, at least not entirely and certainly not the contemporary Germans' fault. Not sure what to say about these trials in particular, I'd have to know about law more. I'll ask my brother about them, I guess.

The "national guilt " is mostly a matter of state protocol and foreign relations. Honestly, noone I know feels personally guilty about anything. Well, my 93yo Grandmother might have reason to because she was actually there, but she don't know what's going on anymore anyways. I'm rather proud of the culture of openness and sensitivity to these issues we have here, which is much better developed than in other countries who have committed atrocities on a smaller scale. Patriotism is considered suspect here at least in public discourse, and you know, I'm fine with that. The only problem I see is that we should not be too timid to communicate our values and standards to immigrants and refugees. I think most of them are eager to become part of something new, and they should know exactly what it is they are joining!

Yes, but it does not lessen guilt of perpetrators.

Obviously it isn't fault of people born long after. But if not Germans (and other nations too) then who is responsible for Shoah? History itself? Spirit of the times?

Not all Germans were guilty of killing or being accessory to it, yes. But indifference which was more widespread than hate also don't absolve of guilt. Here I'm in agreement with Ian Kershaw and his words: The road to Auschwitz was built by hate, but paved with indifference.

It's more about justice and accountability than law itself I would say. I kinda think that man in question should be persecuted, but if he really has dementia then there is no point in doing this I would say.

The federal republic is the legitimate successor of the "third Reich" i suppose, and so, sure, let this state be formally responsible. That's however relatively meaningless unless you specify what this responsibility entails.
