Well that's what training is for. To get stuff like this ironed out so you don't make the mistake in a real game. I don't see the big deal.
He's probably been playing since he was 4. He should know this stuff by now.

No. In baseball you pick the ball up and throw it back in. I had a 9 year old special needs kid on my Little League team that I taught to do that.
