EU: Should the UK Leave or Stay?
#31
RE: EU: Should the UK Leave or Stay?
I don't know why they have put it to the vote.

Well, I have a fair idea actually. The Tories got really scared that UKIP were going to cause them problems in the election, so Cameron promised a referendum if he got in to placate people. And now he has to go through with it.

(Although, not really. Politicians seem to rarely go through with anything they promise.)

To be honest, I can't see it happening. I can't see them taking the action, even if the referendum moves to break from the EU. But then my opinion isn't worth much.

If the Scottish referendum has taught us anything it's that people will vote for the status quo.

I don't for one moment think that there will be a brexit. My only fear is that people won't bother turning out to vote in which case only those interested in the subject will do so. That could heavily skew the vote.

I'm also worried that just the vote itself will cause financial panic mania and crash all the stock markets. The Scottish vote apparently messed with things quite a lot. Now we're talking about a real country! Tongue

This is really nothing like the Scottish referendum. Drawing conclusions from that and relating it to this vote is going to leave you quite surprised.

But it's true that people having an agenda or being angry, are more likely to vote than the apathetic mass. The EU isn't exactly the most sexy topic. So my guess is that it will be a very close call, depending on who's able to motivate their followers to even move their asses to the ballot.

How is it radically different then?

In that regard, I can see the proportion of "leave" supporters who actually vote being higher than the "stay" ones, because they're chomping at the bit for a big change.

If the UK leaves and Scotland does not get its independence then I'm going to become a German national.

One of the quite many things becoming more difficult if the UK was to leave. I'm not the biggest fan of the EU in it's current form, but I know enough of economics 101 that leaving the EU is akin to be fucked in the ass even more for the lower middle class, who are obviously hoping for the big surge if they're no longer part of the community. Duties for many imported goods would be reintroduced, so they would become more expensive. Subsidies would be cut, which would hurt small farmers the most. Just a few obvious things on the long bill that would have to be paid by the small tax payers.

Hope you've got a degree. And of course that your German is good.
