Because I am involved with a dog rescue and was recently put in charge of the Shelter team I get the Euthanasia lists from the local shelters.  There is almost never a Golden Retriever ( which is the breed we handle) on them but by the time I finish scrolling through the list of pit bulls and chihuahuas I'm ready to go get a drink.  And this time of year they are buried in cats.  It is a scandalous situation.  Thanks for saving one, man.

P.S.  Don't declaw the cat unless you are sure you can ALWAYS keep it inside.  They are practically defenseless without them.

Well then, I am planning to not declaw the cat. External Circumstances may make it more of a necessity, such as if it scratches a Child, but I will try and learn and keep up with trimming the Cat's nails. Do you have any tips on this?

No, it would have been my fault for multiple reasons. 
1. I let the kid get near the Cat in a way that it doesn't like he Kid. 
2. I should have trimmed the Cat's nails beforehand, or I trimmed it's nails inproperly, so this wouldn't have happened. This would have been purely my own incompetence. 
3. And finally, in the tinted view of a Parent that has never had a cat or even dislikes Cats, it would have been my fault for not Declawing the cat. A Parent wouldn't care, because it is effecting them and their child personally and physically. 

So really, I need to be a better Cat Owner.

Nope. 
I personally want to keep a decent amount of anonymity, especially from this website, so I go to the point of purposefully changing my personality in public(I am not sure if my thinking pattern itself has changed, at this point). Giving something like this would be rather overexposing, both to me and the cat. Karma is a common male cat name, so I am comfortable sharing information such as it's name and  gender. 
I would tell you it's breed, but I don't even know that, since it's a stray and I don't know cats

Please don't trim your cats nails, and certainly don't get it declawed. Learn to stop kids from annoying your cat or just keep them away and it will be fine. Most kids have it coming anyway.

I second this. As soon as I open a big box, my cat loves to jump in it and will stay there for hours.

One thing I am wondering about is whether I should take it in to get it's front paws declawed. Does anybody have any useful input on this?

DO NOT!  A declawed cat has no defense.  Try as you might, the cat will get out of the house and cannot climb effectively to escape the neighbor's dog nor be able to defend itself.
