I could go further into the directives and explain how this goes beyond the general perception of advertising, but vaping isn't the point I was making Funny that - it seems like vaping is the ONLY thing you've been talking about. It seems to me, that you picked a relatively minor and controversial issue and you just extrapolate on the basis on this one data point. This "freedom of speech" and "human rights" spiel seems like a distraction. Did you buy into a vaping pyramid scheme, or something?

While yes it does take the "accountability" from the representative, I view it more as this issue is so divided and has far reaching impact that it must be left to the people to decide. How many issues or decisions are made by our representatives that we wish we had a say in? There are some bills that are passed that are widely unpopular but because the party of representatives has a majority it was able to pass. The system has flaws but I applaud the referendums that leave the decisions in the hand of the voters that are impacted as opposed to the representatives who "represent" themselves. As I've said earlier, it goes both ways. There are times when the people should get to vote directly on an issue, and I think this is mostly for issues which are civil in nature and affect freedoms, because that way we don't have to wait for the government to catch up to a changing public morality. However, at the same time, there are issues which the public are uninformed on, and should not be able to touch with a barge pole. If we left trade negotiations up to public vote, the markets would likely all collapse. If we allowed people to vote on specific taxes, we'd end up in a tax-free society and millions would die. Some things are good for the country, and good for society, but extremely unpopular. (June 24, 2016 at 10:51 am)FatAndFaithless Wrote:(June 24, 2016 at 10:50 am)madog Wrote: Exactly ... An electronic cigarette isn't only used for nicotine, it is just a device like a car Either you don't understand or you don't want to understand? The devices that are used for other substances are not banned from advertising, but e cigarettes THE DEVICE is .... The actual consequences is that non nicotine containing e cigarette devices, that is without nicotine are banned from advertisement .... By the way that is not off the top of my head, the MHRA have stated this .... (16) ‘electronic cigarette’ means a product that can be used for consumption of nicotine-containing vapour via a mouth piece, or any component of that product, including a cartridge, a tank and the device without cartridge or tank. Electronic cigarettes can be disposable or refillable by means of a refill container and a tank, or rechargeable with single use cartridges; If you look at the EU wording and in particular "CAN" rather than "IS" or "is intended to be used" is a catch all

Put decisions concerning air traffic control and surgery up to the general public for a vote? They'd probably be no less inept on those topics than they would be regarding trade and economics. I used to think referendums were a no brainier. Then I realised how ironic that statement is. Turning complex, crucial matters into a marketing campaign is a disaster. As we all just learned.
