I would absolutely have your antivirus off during updates. Especially if you use avira or avast.

Linux Mint loads into a VM as the installer, so you can try it out before you actually install.

I was out buying food at local store... discovered updates finished downloading, now it has to install them. I forgot about that lol. But it should install them a lot quicker than downloading them.

Probably Avira. It's decent, but ad-laden for the free version.
It has known issues with Windows Installers.
